Day 20: Dogs

Today was rough. I’ve had several run-ins with dogs over the past three weeks. Usually in smaller towns there have been dogs who run out at me barking, so far I have not been bitten and typically I stand still or walk slowly away while they run back to their houses.  My concern is they not get hit by cars. Today that happened.

I was running along hwy 97, a very busy road, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a dog start to run across the hwy toward me, before I could react the dog was hit by a truck doing at least 70mph and mercifully killed instantly. It broke my heart as I saw the whole thing and there was nothing I could do to prevent it. I spoke to the homeowner who was devastated, the truck never stopped.

I was terribly sad the rest of the run and am still thinking about it.

We also said goodbye to our kids, Megan and Owen who have been crewing the past few days and welcomed Shayna & Jeff Butler who will be crewing the leg between Klamath Falls and Medford. Shayna is Paddy’s longtime teaching partner and it will be nice to have them along.
